Construction begins on Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal
CSX has begun construction on the new Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal. The facility is an important connection in CSX’s National Gateway initiative opening up new customer opportunities in Pennsylvania and surrounding states and allowing shippers to take advantage of the economics of double-stack containers between Mid-Atlantic ports and Midwest consumers.
CSX is investing approximately $60 million in the terminal, which will provide direct intermodal freight access to western Pennsylvania shippers, strengthening the region’s transportation infrastructure and shifting long-haul freight from highway to rail. The project will redevelop the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie (P&LE) Railroad Yard, which operated for more than 100 years on the 70-acre site. Construction is expected to take approximately two years.

Virginia Avenue Tunnel Update
The Virginia Avenue Tunnel (VAT) is a more than 100-year-old, 4,000’ long single-track, single-stack rail tunnel in the heart of Washington, D.C. and a critical piece in the Nation’s rail system. The VAT reconstruction project is a key component of the National Gateway initiative, an $850 million public-private partnership that is increasing intermodal capacity by clearing key routes between Mid-Atlantic ports and the Midwest for double-stack intermodal trains. Modernizing the VAT involves increasing the tunnel width to install a second track and raising the height of the tunnel roof to make room for double-stack intermodal trains.
The VAT project is currently in Phase I which involves construction of the first new tunnel which will be adjacent to the existing tunnel. The expectation is for the first tunnel to be open to train traffic in late 2016/early 2017. Phase II of the project will involve construction of the second new tunnel which is targeting completion in 2018. The construction sequence overview below provides a high-level visual of the project’s scope.
